It’s the time of year for postal goodness. Xmas goodies are arriving daily from hither & yon, and there’s a tea cosy swap going on so I’m busy mailing as well as anticipating, and then there’s new friends from Ravelry swapping yarns with me…so I wasn’t too surprised to get a little bag in the mail the other day.
What really floored me was that inside was a beautiful autumny green silky Clapotis. It is slightly felted and a couple of its dropped stitches weren’t laddered. All of this rang a bell.
I think it is beautiful no less, but it made me think of the mistress whose eyes are nothing like the sun. So here’s my response:
A Sonnet to the Clapotis
What knitter could have wrought such misery
From the famous ladderly Frenchy stoleNotorious, seductive Clapotis.
Her first she had knitted too long, too boldThe next, a sweetly silken autumn green,
too eagerly begun, and then — the hitchRapt in its woolly shining sheen
Left in her wake, first, an undropp’d stitch!A further insult came soon enough
She’d made each tbl, every ladderThen, doused in the wash, turned them all to fluff
Sadly felted like they didn’t matterBut the tale ends well for this Clapotis
Now it’s in Adelaide — and loved by me!

Thank you Donni! I’m thrilled to bits to have it.

I love it when things created with time and love have a way of finding homes that they belong to……
